Threads are a chat view that consolidates replies from channels and direct messages into one place, so members can follow and contribute to ongoing conversations without losing context. Thread

Overview

Threads display every reply tied to an original message, whether it was posted in a channel or a direct message. Instead of scrolling through a busy channel to find context, members open a thread and see the full back-and-forth in sequence. The Threads view also gives members a single inbox to track every thread they are part of across the Academy.

Access the Threads View

The Threads view lives in the Chat area of the Academy. Open it any time you want to catch up on replies across multiple conversations.
  1. Click Chat in the left navigation.
  2. Switch to the Threads tab at the top of the Chat panel.
  3. Browse the list of threads, ordered by most recent activity.

Reply in a Thread

Replies belong in a thread when you want to keep a side conversation grouped under the original message instead of posting a new top-level message to the channel.
  1. Hover over the message you want to reply to.
  2. Click Reply in thread in the message toolbar.
  3. Type your response in the thread panel that opens on the right.
  4. Click Send to post the reply.
The reply appears beneath the original message and surfaces in every participant’s Threads view.

Open a Thread in Full Screen

The thread side panel inside a channel can feel cramped for longer replies. To get a wider view, open the thread from the Chat > Threads tab. Threads opened from the dedicated Threads tab expand to fill the chat area, giving you more room to read and write.

Stay Up to Date with Thread Replies

When someone replies to a thread you have posted in, the reply appears in your Threads tab and surfaces a notification badge on the Chat icon in the left navigation. Open the Threads tab to see new activity grouped by the most recent reply.
Coach members to use threads for any reply that branches off the original topic. Channel feeds stay focused, the Threads view becomes a useful catch-up inbox, and no one has to scroll past long side conversations to see what is new in the channel.

FAQ

Where do I find the Threads view? Click Chat in the left navigation, then switch to the Threads tab. Threads from both channels and direct messages appear in one list, sorted by most recent activity. My reply keeps posting as a new message instead of going into the thread. What is going wrong? Use Reply in thread from the message toolbar before typing your response. Replying in the channel input or quoting a message posts a new top-level message rather than a thread reply. If you have used Reply in thread and the message still posts at the top level, reach out to Disco support, since this has been reported as an intermittent bug in the past and resolved by the product team. Can I open a thread in full screen? Yes. Open the thread from Chat > Threads. Threads opened from the dedicated Threads tab expand to fill the chat area, which is helpful for long replies. The in-channel side panel is a fixed width. Will I get notified when someone replies to a thread I have not posted in? You receive notifications only for threads you have posted in. To follow a thread you want to monitor, leave a brief reply so future updates surface in your Threads view. How do I clear the red notification dot on the Chat icon? The dot indicates unread activity, which often comes from thread replies. Open the Threads tab and view each unread thread to mark them as read. Unread channel messages also contribute to the badge, so check the Channels tab if the dot persists. Do threads work the same in direct messages as they do in channels? Yes. You can reply in a thread on any direct message the same way you would in a channel, and DM threads appear in your Threads view alongside channel threads. Can I download or export the contents of a thread? Native export is not available today. If you need to capture a thread for analysis, copy the content from the thread view manually.
