Overview

Ask AI helps members find answers without searching through programs, lessons, or documents manually. Each member only gets answers based on content they have access to, so private or unpublished content is never used. Setup takes about five minutes and requires admin access.

How Ask AI works

When a member asks a question, Ask AI searches your Academy’s content, such as lessons, documents, recordings, and channel conversations, and builds an answer from what it finds. Each answer links to the sources it used.
  • It respects member access. Ask AI only uses content each member already has permission to see. If a member can’t access a program, group, or channel, Ask AI won’t use it in their answers.
  • You control the sources. Operators choose which content Ask AI can use, including optional web search. Your Academy’s content always comes first.
  • It remembers the conversation. Members can ask follow-up questions without starting over.

Why use Ask AI

For operators
  • Unblock members without being the bottleneck. Members get answers in the moment instead of waiting on you or your team.
  • Scale member support. Ask AI handles common questions about your content, giving your team more time to focus on other priorities.
  • Reinforce your curriculum. Ask AI helps members understand and apply what they learn in your programs.
For members
  • A study partner on demand. Get summaries, examples, and explanations of what you’re learning, right inside the lesson.
  • Get answers faster. Find what you need yourself, without waiting for an instructor or admin to reply.
  • No question is too small. Ask about anything, from the basics to deep dives. Other members can’t see your conversations.

For operators

Ask AI is off by default. Follow these steps to set it up, turn it on for members, and track how it’s used.

Set up Ask AI

Set up and test Ask AI before members can see it.
  1. Go to Admin → Disco AI.
  2. Click Edit on Ask AI to open its settings.
  3. On the Details tab:
    • Enter a nickname. This is the agent’s name your members see.
    • Choose where to show AI suggested prompts: globally, in content, or both.
    • Add any manual prompts you want members to see.
  4. On the Sources tab, choose what Ask AI can reference. Turn each source on or off to control what goes into answers. Internal sources
    • Content: Lesson content and materials in curriculum or collection apps. Always included.
    • Documents: PDFs from your media library.
    • Videos: Recordings from past events and videos from your media library.
    • Audio Files: Audio clips and files from your media library.
    • Disco Channel Messages: Messages from selected Disco channels.
    • Slack Channel Messages: Messages from selected Slack channels.
    External sources
    • Web Search: Adds web results to support broader answers. Turn this off to keep answers limited to your Academy.
    • Links: Public web links you add.
    • Knowledge Base: Public knowledge bases from tools like Notion, Pylon, and Zendesk.
  5. Click Save Changes.
  6. Click Preview in the top right to try Ask AI with sample member questions.
Preview only appears while Ask AI is turned off, so test it before enabling Ask AI in Step 2.
Tip: Add a clear Academy description. Ask AI uses your Academy’s name and description as context for every answer. Go to Admin → Settings to update the Description field. In two or three sentences, describe your members, what they’ll learn or achieve, and the tone that fits your Academy.

Enable Ask AI for members

When you’re ready to launch, turn Ask AI on for members.
  1. Go to Admin → Disco AI.
  2. Turn on the Ask AI toggle.
  3. Click Yes, Enable Ask AI.
  4. Choose whether to add Ask AI to the For You page. See Step 3.
Once enabled, members will see Ask AI within their Academy (in the header navigation, inside lessons and content, and on the For You page, if added).
Tip: Set expectations early. Help members get the most out of Ask AI by explaining what it can do. Add a short note to your onboarding or welcome content explaining that Ask AI answers questions about your programs and resources.

Add Ask AI to the For You page

When enabling Ask AI, you can optionally add it to the For You page. Choose yes to add it automatically. If you skipped this, you can add it anytime:
  1. Add or edit the Hero block on the For You page.
  2. In the Hero block settings, enable Ask AI.
  3. Click Save.

View Ask AI engagement

Track usage and feedback in either place:
  • Admin → Disco AI → Ask AI (Edit) → Analytics
  • Admin → Insights → Ask AI
Both show:
  • Number of members who used Ask AI
  • Total questions asked
  • Thumbs up and thumbs down feedback
  • Engagement trends over time
To read full conversations, go to Admin → Insights → Ask AI → Conversations with Ask AI. Members are anonymized, so you won’t see who asked.

Ask a question

Open Ask AI from:
  • Header navigation: Click the Ask AI star icon next to bookmarks and notifications.
  • Inside a lesson (text or video): Click the Ask AI star icon to open a side panel.
  • For You page: Type in the Ask a question box in the welcome banner, if added.
To ask a question:
  1. Enter the question in the Ask a question box and press Enter.
  2. Review the response, linked sources, and related questions.
  3. Continue the conversation, or give feedback with thumbs up or thumbs down.
Ask AI works best for questions about your Academy’s content. It can’t help you navigate the platform or answer questions outside your Academy.

Get better answers

  • Be specific. Name the program, lesson, or goal you’re working on.
  • Say what you need. Ask for a summary, a checklist, an example, or next steps.
  • Follow up. If an answer is close, ask Ask AI to go deeper or apply it to your situation.
  • Check the sources. If a source seems off, ask why it’s relevant.

No. Disco only uses the sources you provide to generate responses in your Academy. Your data is not sent to model providers like OpenAI for training purposes.
No. Ask AI only generates answers from content the member can access. Private or unpublished content is never used.
No. If a source is hidden from a member, Ask AI cannot use it for that member’s answers. Every response is filtered by what the member already has permission to see.
Yes. Answers are generated instantly from your current content.
Yes. Asking a question in another language generally returns an answer in that language. Language coverage depends on the underlying model providers like OpenAI.
Yes. Ask AI is available on web, mobile web, and the Disco mobile app.
No. Answers are generated automatically. You can influence them by improving your content sources and refining your suggested prompts.
No. Ask AI is either on or off for the entire Academy.
No. Other members can’t see your conversations. Admins can review conversations, but they’re anonymized, so admins can’t see who asked.
Yes. Go to Admin > Insights > Ask AI, then select Export CSV. The export respects the report’s active filters and sort order and includes conversation-level metrics, but not Member identity or transcript text. Larger exports are processed in the background and sent by email when ready.
Ask AI is permission-aware. If the post or program lives in a restricted area the asking member cannot access, Ask AI will not surface it. Confirm the member has access to the program or member group where that content lives, and confirm the content is included as a source on the Sources tab.
Disco uses trusted foundation models like those from OpenAI, with custom system instructions and conservative model settings (such as temperature) to keep responses grounded in your sources. Disco continuously reviews AI output using human evaluators and automated review systems to identify patterns and improve accuracy over time.
